Phil Hogan asks Brian Cowen directly does he think Ahern is telling the truth, he says that Cowen must "state clearly whether Ahern is telling the truth about his finances".
He continues, "Brian Cowen has insisted to the Dáil on a number of occasions that Bertie Ahern was truthful in his dealings with the Mahon Tribunal. Does he still believe this is the case?"
"The Mahon Tribunal has heard conflicting evidence, more details of sterling transactions and lodgements for Bertie Ahern."
Phil Hogan then says that this distracting the work of government and that it is happening "at a time when the economy is in decline, crime is rife on our streets and prices and unemployment are rising."
"At a time when the economy is faltering, the Finance Minister has gone to ground. His silence is fuelling the public perception that nobody is in charge."
He finally states "Fianna Fáil has regularly complained about the high cost of this Tribunal. It is now clear that the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern is contributing to prolonging the Mahon Tribunal as well as delaying its work".
Cowen must make his position clear on whether he believes Ahern's stories, the whole Mahon affair is having an effect on the running of the economy, And it is also clear that Ahern is helping to rise the costs of the tribunal by not co-operating fully, lying under oath, and he and his ministers and TDs can complain about the costs.
What is Brian Cowen's position on this matter?
