I have it from certain people in Dublin that it will be next week, between the 10th and 15th.

I am in a sweep on the publication date, I have the 17th Jan. €250 in the pot, so am more than usually interested.

I phoned today, when I said what I wanted to know I was passed on to the Registrar immediately. That never happened before.

I thought it was being held off until a certain criminal trial arising from one module of the tribunal was over - and that trial is currently in limbo pending a Supreme Court challenge.

Or will Mahon simply publish report with the bits relating to that case being witheld until a later date?

I have no idea, and I have heard false stories about imminent publication before, but this time I have it from two fairly reputable sources. Whether it is true remains to be seen, but I have it that the Oireachtas will be presented with the report between the 10th and 15th.

Mahon has already told the Government that releasing the report now would prejudice the current trial of a number of councillors on charges of corruption. The government would no doubt like to see the report emerge in time to distract from the harsh budget, but Mahon has to be aware of the interests of justice.

Ahern, Sean Fitz, Lenihan, Fingers, Cowen etc will, given enough time, be lauded as the nation's great heros, but that's the cronyism that infests Independent newspapers, RTE etc We'll be told it was all a great master stroke and it worked out for the better in the long run, our maturity as a nation etc As Orwell pout it "War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength."
