Gardaí ordered to salute Provo coffins.

Garda told to salute IRA coffins - Tribunal - RT News
Retired CS Owen Giblin has told the Smithwick Tribunal that, at the time that the coffins of the three Provos eliminated by the SAS in Gibraltar were being taken through Dundalk, the then Commissioner, Éamon Doherty, issued an instruction that gardaí should salute the coffins.

I am shocked that senior gardaí would order their subordinates to salute terrorists.

Good to see some independent thought and actions were still left in members of Irish society. Would you have a issue if he ordered them to Salute a SAS coffin???

I remember in the early 70's seeing British soldiers saluting IRA coffins.

Would you rather a baton charge on mourners? Commandeer the hearse? Bury the coffin in concrete? Like FG did with Frank Stagg's funeral?
Gardai salute all passing coffins do they not? Cops around the World do it.
I saw a photo from the 70s of British soldiers saluting an IRA funeral as it passed.
Brits came out looking stronger from that image.

Two unarmed Irishmen and an unarmed Irish woman were shot down in the street without being given a chance to surrender or any attempt made to arrest them. According to witnesses, the victims were then finished off with shots to the head.

There was huge and understandable anger in Ireland, north and south, that a government which decried the tactics of 'murder from a ditch' would gladly employ its own forces in pursuit of self same tactics while differentiating, morally, between itself and the Provisional IRA.

They salute all coffins draped in the tricolour - according to the justification used following this incident in the Dáil.

Check 19 April 1988, searchword 'salute'

I can recall talking to a ex British squaddy and he told me that while they hate a hate for PIRA, they never classed them as terrorists/criminals. He said they admired some of the PIRA operations for the inventivness and courage that was involved.
