It's interesting that the outrage among posters over this act is almost certainly inverse to their outrage at 2 unarmed Irishmen and an unarmed Irishwoman being killed by British forces.

What outrage is needed ? The Brits killed three psychopaths whose intention was to park one car so that it could be pulled out when the bomb car came along. The target was tourists - presumably Brits - and a band. If the Guards or the DF had whacked the Dublin / Monaghan bombers or their scouts the world would have been a better place and a lot of people would still be alive.

Truly shocking that someone with obvious terrorist sympathies should rise to the rank of Chief Super in the Gardai. The Gibson Inquiry is certainly unearthing disturbing facts about elements with the Gardai which many unionists suspected were there. However it's good to see that those orders were ignored, as they should have been.

Perhaps he, like many people of his age, were sympathetic to the terrorists that fought during the war of independence and saw the PIRA as a continuation of their struggle. Just a thought.

Members of the Guards who lost members to Provo murderers should not be saluting terrorists, end of story. If their families had any decency, they would have disowned the bombers.

Quite correct. British soldiers did salute IRA coffins in the early days. In WW2 dead German aircrew were buried with full military honours in the UK. The Germans did the same with allied air crew.

as someone who was there that night , among tens of thousands on the streets of dundalk to honour those volunteers , it would probably have been a wise move for dundalk gardai . The scale of the turnout shocked many , including myself .
