Elaine Byrne - Tribunals have made €500m. net profit for the State

Elaine Byrne on Late Debate says she has run some numbers on the cost of the various Tribunals going back to McCracken, and the proceeds to the State resulting from their work.

Her findings: costs about €500 million; income about €1000 million. Nett profit about half a billion.

It's a good point all right. And just imagine the legal bill Ahern will face for his failure to co-operate with Mahon!

Great, that will help pay the losing bidders in the Lowry/DOB case.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

Really glad that she pointed that out. The stupid short-sighted wailing about Tribunals always overlooks the value they have added to the country, in financial terms and in terms of exposing what had gone on.

If we had no Tribunals, then Haughey, Lowry, Burke, Lawlor, and that fat junkie slob Ben Dunne would all still be saints.

Income mainly from backpayment of tax and penalties, paid over by the various scum-lords who were caught with their pants down (literally, in Ben Dunne's case)

yeah me too...............I'd like to see where the income from the tribunals has come from - are we taxing the coffee and sandwiches?

I have a feeling that she is counting the PAC enquiries into the banks and offshore accounts etc etc in this aswell - they scared the bejasus out of bankers and tax-dodgers , got to the bone of the issue in double quick time, got results and got vast amounts of cash out of the perpetrators - in fact everything that the tribunals didnt achieve - the tribunals came up with some interesting stuff but were essentially a FAS scheme for the law community.

The Bailey Bros had to make the biggest settlement ever with the Revenue after Flood/Mahon.
