Near Miss at DUB, 757 and lawnmower

As reported in today's UK independent:

757 reports near miss with lawnmower - Europe, World - The Independent

    From the article:

A recording of the ASMGCS images from the event, which was still under test, showed a ride-on mower moving along the runway.

"The test recording also shows... the potential conflict between the landing aircraft and the ride-on mower," the report added.
    Cue close shave jokes

Given that it was 1:53am, and that the lawnmower must have been lit like an Xmas tree it reflects badly on the flight crew that they didn't query their landing clearance with ATC, it's not as if there would have been traffic on the controller's frequency at that hour.

did you read the article ? the mower had no illumination at all

"The mower had no rear lighting or flashing beacon and it was not equipped with any airband radio equipment capable of listening out on the control tower frequency," said the report

and its the fault of the air crew ? really......

I think it was 1.53am Zulu time, as would be used in airports worldwide - which would have corresponded with 2.53am local time in Dublin. You're correct about the mower, which was not illuminated.

I have heard, though I'm not certain of this, that the DAA vehicle in communication with the tower had reported all vehicles had returned to base BEFORE the tower controller cleared the 757 to land - but that, unknown to everyone, the lawnmower was still trundling down the runway. If that's the case, then bloody hell.....

Sobering reading indeed - hell knows what would have happened if impact with the driver/ride on mower had occurred

Interesting that this incident was not reported by the Irish media.
Once again we have to rely on the UK media.

I didn't see the bit about nthe mower not being illuminated, and I find it rather hard to believe that a lawn mower in the middle of the night in an area with lots of very expensive low poles and pylons (RVF kit and such) would operate in only illumination from the runway lights.
