800 BA workers to work unpaid

British Airways has said 800 workers have volunteered to work for nothing for up to a month, following the airline's request to cut costs.

Another 4,000 workers are taking unpaid leave for varying amounts of time, while 1,400 people have volunteered to work part-time.

The airline had appealed to 30,000 workers to work for nothing for up to one month, to help the firm cut costs.

The airline, which is struggling in the downturn, says the move will save £10m.

BA's chief executive Willie Walsh has already agreed to work unpaid in July, forgoing his month's salary of £61,000.

You ought to change your handle to Sillymanpolitician. I have yet to see anything Super come out of you.
Ho-Hum, another run of the mill Irish pol who thinks he's gods bloody gift.

    Anyhow, back to the issue.
No workers in BA have been exploited - those who have volunteered (do you understand the concept?) don't need your sympathy.

Why don't you save your sympathy for the Irish workers who ARE being exploited - at Ryanair.

I watched CH4 News just now, which included an interview with a Union rep who said his Union had suggested unpaid leave be offerred to the BA staff 4 months ago. BA had told the Union they wouldn't give unpaid leave, except as part of an overall cuts package. Now they are back, asking the staff to take it!

So BA management (Wonderboy Willy) wasted 4 months potential cost savings, for nothing.
The unpaid leave offer will be over subscribed - as will the Aer Lingus unpaid leave offer, when it finally comes.

The twits who criticise Unions for 'intransigence' are throwbacks, who haven't yet seen the light themselves, and thus bear many similiarities to the intransigent management in companies like BA.
