Since when was Continental Airlines a coroner ?
Not a big deal. As it said, two co-pilots took over. There was never any danger to passengers. Sad about the pilot though.
A single pilot can handle any commercial aircraft - approach and landing entail a fairly heavy workload but it´s not a problem. Also ATC make things easy for them by, for example, giving priority over all other traffic.
Calls into question their policies on pilot health
Health policy is not dictated by the airline - in this case it was a U.S. airline so you´re looking at the FAA. All pilots have pretty strict medical every year - and it gets tougher as they get older. But you cannot - no matter what policy you implement - guarantee against an incident like this. You can have a clear ECG and die of a heart attack a few hours later. Only way to avoid this risk is to stay on terra firma - and get run over by a bus !!
Fair enough but I do not want someone who COULD die to be in charge of an airliner. He was 61, not exactly an age that you would expect this kind of thing. There will, of course, be an investigation so lets leave speculation aside, but let me ask you, would you let your loved ones aboard an airline that lad lax procedures regarding pilot health?
sad about the pilot, but it happens. Perfectly healthy people, who have been fully checked out, do die suddenly.
Argument for having three pilots, especially on long flights.
