RTÉ News: DAA seeking 400 redundancies
'A defeatist attitude now would surely lead to defeat, it primarly a question of whether we have confidence in ourselves and the dilligence and determination of our people,We can't opt out of the future.' Sean Lemass (1965)
Like this is a great shock.
1.6 Billion investment in an airport that at most is worth 750 Million...............great idea NOT.
Actually, I like the new terminal. Can't wait to use it.
The existing airport is sheding jobs and they want to open a new terminal! You could not make this up.
Why? Do you think the DAA should just employ more people than they need and forget about improving the passenger experience to pay for it?
I'm sorry for anyone losing their job involuntarily, but I doubt thats how this will work at the DAA.
In fairness, this is about addressing existing funding problems. It will be a long time before the terminal is open.
That said, I have some doubts about the new terminal. As airport design is changing to require fewer check in desks and fewer baggage belts, it'll be possible to get better use out of existing facilities. Also, I think it's a lower priority than a 2nd runway in Dublin.
Any word on where the redundancies will be? I assume Shannon will be disproportionately hit as it has a much worse passengers/staff ration than Dublin or Cork.

Michael O Leary did his best to warn the DAA with respect to their excessive spending.

Dublin Airport - 'The most expensive European Regional Airport to pass through'
Dublin Airport has the lowest charges of any major european airport.
Maybe they should ignore Micko and put the charges up.
That'd solve the funding problem.
After all, what is Ryanair doing operating in and out of Dublin anyhow? Its a low cost operator which concentrates on small secondary airports situated often hundreds of miles away any major metropolitan centre. These small airports need Ryanair more than Ryanair needs them, so the charges remain rock bottom.
Not so with Dublin. Its a major airport attached to a capital city. Yet O'Leary wants boondocks airport type charges.
Let him bog off to Knock and call it Dublin West (like he calls Prestwick "Glasgow West").
If Ryanair can't afford Dublin Airports costs then he should piss off to someplace cheaper.
The DAA have bent over backwards for him too long.
