New bicycle lanes in NYC, an option for Dublin?

I am a cyclist. When I lived in Dublin (up until late 2007) I was a most-of-the-time cyclist but it was tough, god was it tough. I moved to Chicago in 2007 and was amazed by the facilities there for cyclists (lanes, racks, buses etc). Moved to NYC last year and it has been tough but they are really really trying to improve facilities.
They are providing many new cycle lanes (shared with traffic)
They are changing to zoning code so that all new buildings need cycle parking
Now they are providing largely separated cycle lanes for large parts of the City (8 and 9th avenue are getting the roll out lanes of about 25 blocks each, 8th avenue is uptown, 9th avenue is downtown). These routes have car parking on the outside of the bike lanes

You can look at some of the pictures here:

Given that that DCC have been looking at improving cycle facilities and the government is now talking about facilitating cycling commuting, should both be looking at providing more facilities like this?

You may have noticed that the streets are just a tiny bit wider in Manhattan than they are in Dublin.

Bit of a generalization , no? We get the same here in Limerick , " Oh where will I park my cars ? " Its not a solid argument imo.

Funnily enough, I have noticed that. However, I think the point I was trying to make was that cyclists are protected by having the lane on the inside of the parking lane rather than on the outside.

Hey Simbo Im surprised at your avatar considering your positive views on cycle lanes . Im not having a dig , but in my town your(avatars) party are the biggest obstacles to cycle lanes . Its on record in the council . They always vote against them , because their voters think they are entitled to park on main , public roads ! For shame.

yeh it's pretty good but the authorities here will NEVER take a lane off cars to give to bikes as they seem to have done here. It'll be at least another 10 years before the upper echelons of aministration in our cities take cycling seriously/

Kind of a tricky one as most Dublin streets are single lanes each way. Cycling is really only an option if you live in an inner suburb, 2-3 miles from the city centre so taking a whole lane is hard to justify.

Where cycle lanes are provided off the road (like in Drumcondra) most cyclists refuse to use them and cycle on the road.

I wonder when will cyclists start taking safety seriously and stop flying through red lights on pedestrian crossings or the wrong way up one way streets where pedestrians are expecting traffic to come from one direction.

When cyclists stop cycling contraflow on one way streets, obey traffic lights, don't cycle on the pavement over the age of seven and read warning and indicator lights on motor vehicles then there should be a rollout of properly functioning cycle lanes that are designed with cyclists in mind.

Before then there should be enforcement
Two to one says you're wrong
