Garda lack of enforcement on cyclists

In my childhood, people didn't dare to go cycling at night without a bicycle flashlamp and a taillight. With the very low crime rate then outside of Dublin, the Gardai strictly enforced the law on cyclists, possibly because they were bored for lack of activity.

For at least fifteen years now,Garda enforcement of the law on cyclists has been almost non-existent. Tonight in a typical occurence,in the space of 10 minutes driving I came across two cyclists without taillights or any illumination. As for flashlamps, they have disappeared in the cities. This is likely to be an important cause of motorist collisions with cyclists.

The Minister of Transport should urge the Gardai to take cycling infringements seriously. If only a handful of guards in Dublin started issuing tickets to cyclists, word of mouth about this would make cyclists more aware of their responsibilities.

Maybe the EU should crack down on Ireland for not providing lanes for cyclists in most large towns . There are EU directives on such things and money has been given to councils to provide adequete cycle lanes , yet often they dont provide them .

This has been dealt with extensively on another thread. The problem is that the Gardai feel it beneath their dignity and/or not worth their while to enforce these laws, as the penalty for breach of same is derisory.

The trouble is, the more small breaches of the law are tolerated, the higher the major crime rate seems to climb. I believe it is known as the "Broken Windows Theory".

Yawn, I remember the good old days when, the Gardai woould beat the living bejesus out of ya for looking at them sideways, them was the days when people had respect for law and order. Crime has not risen that much all that has happened is that the reporting of crime in the media has increased to stupid proportions.

If someone is stupid enough to cycle at night with no lights, then it wont be long before they get a smack of a bus, if you have such a problem with it, stop the cyclist and say it to them directly.

Whether it's be design or accident I find car design keeps out much more sound than bicycles. I think it has to do with the roof, windows, engine and radio.
