Ryanair to scrap all check-in desks

Ryanair to close all airport check-in desks - The Irish Times - Sat, Feb 21, 2009

Ryanair say they plan to force all their customers to check-in online by the end of the year. Sounds unworkable to me.

Only EU citizens can check-in online. Meaning US/Oz/tourists and the 10 million non-EU perminant residents of the EU, will no longer be able to fly ryanair (unless the scrap that rule).
Also, passengers need to get access to a pc and printer 72 hours before their flight - makes it difficult if your are travelling around.

Personally, this will put me off flying Ryanair.

Remember, this is private enterprise. We can assume they know what they are doing. If they get it wrong, they lose money.

Compare this to the public sector. We cannot assume they know what they are doing. If they get it wrong, the tax-payer picks up the tab.

Anglo wasn't public sector when they got it wrong, yet we still had to pick up the bill !

This is potentially a private monopoly. If a private monoploy makes our lives harder we just have to lump it. They don't loose money because the public have no alternative.

Ryanair is already a de-facto monopoly in Dublin as everything they do is aped by the unimaginative management of Aer Lingus. If ryanair scrap check in desks, 6 month later Aer lingus will do the same. By july 2009 it will be virtually impossible to fly out of the state unless you have access to a working printer. Non-EU nationals won't be able to enter or leave Ireland at all.

I'd imagine they'll have a way around the passport thing by having one desk with a massive que for ''exceptional'' circumstances.

standing in the que will mean more flights are missed ..... this will lead to more rip off last minute ryanaire flights being purchased......

Really don't understand how people are so respectful of Mr o'Leary. . . He is a hard worker I suppose but his sole aim is to degrade people (customers & staff) to the level of cattle.

I don't mind being treated like cattle for a 90 minute flight if the price is right, the destination is close to where I want to go, and there isn't too much extra hassle.

Do you long for the days when it was 400punts to London and we were treated like royalty?

His sole aim is continue builidng a successive viable company whihc creates jobs.

Too long, we were forced to pay over the odds for air travel....they're buses with wings.

The public would have an alternative if Aer Lingus didn't follow Ryanair's lead. If Aer Lingus thinks O'Leary's policy will be unpopular, all they have to do is stand pat and watch Ryanair's passengers switch to them.

Yet another reason not to fly Ryanair.

Do we want a two-tier travel system? One for human beings, and another for cattle?

    Take your pick.
