Fine Gael to raise Airport Passport Control Delays in the Dáil

Fine Gael Justice Spokesman Charlie Flanagan has said he will be demanding answers from Justice Minister Dermot Ahern in the Dáil today (Tuesday), after it emerged that passengers going through Dublin Airport were being delayed for up to 90 minutes while being processed through passport control.

About time. It's particularly disgraceful that the immigration agents have closed the Ireland/EU line, making Irish people line up with Brazilians, Botsanans and Borneans as we come home to our own country. I complained to the cop the last time I came through, as I didn't appreciate wasting 25 minutes in line with foreigners, but all I got from him was surly insolence.

It's about time the flouting of the Common Travel area by the Gardai has been raised in the Dail.

It is a disgrace to have to prove one's nationality travelling between Ireland and the UK.

The common travel area is dead. Ireland withdrew de-facto in 1997. The UK is withdrawing later this year.

Came through the airport at about 11.30 last friday night. The queue stretched back about 100 metres on the walkway from the gates, before you even got to the actual queues for passport control. (There's an overhead sign telling you you're 70 metres from passport control - the corridor was jammed a long way back from that sign.)

That walkway was absolutely jammed - it was like a sauna - 4 or 5 flights seemed to have arrived in short order. If there had been any kind of emergency - fire, bomb scare etc., it would have chaotic and very dangerous.

The gardai were taking their time, but the DAA also have questions to answer with regard to Health & Safety risks.

Do they hop out the windows on the corridor before passport control?

Fine, do that. Nobodys arguing with you on that point.

Thats still no excuse for the shambolic mess that passport control has become. We are trying to leverage every remaining advantage thgat we have as a country at the moment, and yet when visiting business people come here this is how they are treated. What will their first impressions of Ireland be? Hardly the type of place worthy of investment?

I went through on Monday morning in about 30 seconds: EU lane open, and even an extra guy on standing outside the booths waving people through.

No, but a lot of them throw away their passports before they reach Dublin.
