Aer Lingus now more Ryanair than Ryanair itself

Aer lingus now charges €30 per bag, quotes prices excluding all taxes, adds on €10 per passenger for processing your payment and automatically adds €15 per passenger in outrageously overpriced 'insurance'.

They also go further than Ryanair - charging you to pick your seat!

Would we notice any difference if they were taken over by Ryanair?

Are there any proper airlines in Ireland anymore?

Pack light and don't buy the insurance.

    Easy.

    Or fly Ryanair.

They only charge €15 for a bag.

But fly you to nowhere near your destination, have more cramped planes and a chaotic boarding procedure.

    But whatever works for you...

Your point is well made. Aer Lingus functionaries get a free ride on the media when they purport to show themselves as a "full-service airline". The reality is as you say, they are as RyanAir as RyanAir. I won't bore readers by detailing various horror stories of rude and incompetent Air Lingus staff, I am sure all air travellers could offer a half-dozen such.

Some people say that they are better on the transAtlantic route, I do not know as I tend to fly Delta (reasonably good) or Continental (pretty lousy).

The government is broke. It should sell off Aer Lingus, presumably to RyanAir.

Ryanair can't get me to the country I want to go to. So I can't really use them. Mind you, I don't often use Aer Lingus either.

Aer Lingus charge the follwing baggage rates short-haul. Book on-line and its 12 euro per bag, do it at the airport and its 18 (ryanair is 20). Aer Lingus allow you 20kg of checked in luggage ryanair only 15. While ryanair allow you to carry onboard 10kgs of hand luggage compared to Aer Lingus 6kg, the max dimensions of the bag that ryanair allow are smaller than those that Aer Lingus allow. The devil is in the detail as they say! Aer Lingus do not charge for checked baggage on long-haul flights, there is an allowance of 2 pieces per passanger.
