Not as dissapointed your boss must be about the fact that he won't be needing it anymore.

    No fat lady singing yet.

O'Leary far too conciliatory, is there still an odious rodent in the room?

He still has a week to up the offer I think. If he really wants the takeover, he might as well do it. The worst that can happen is that the government will say no again. There's always a chance that something major in his favour could happen between now and mid-February (after which he'll have to wait a while before having another go).

He indicated that he wasn't going to rise the offer significantly. Neither did he seem to be in any hurry to address the competition issues raised by the minister. But you're right there is a very slim chance.

IMHO there is no doubt that part of his motivation is to genuinely take over the airline. But part of it is also publicity and personal ambition.
"The thing that always annoyed me about traditional Irish historiography was the paradox of its Anglocentrism. People are now prepared, I think, to confront the possibility that many Irish problems are, in a sense, indigenous to the Irish situation." Roy Foster (1989).

...and the publicity has not been very good. Several negative things about Ryanair's business have been aired which (while known for some time) haven't received any publicity before. In particular, the argument that Ryanair needs Aer Lingus more than Aer Lingus needs Ryanair. That's bad for the image of a successful company. Prolonging the takeover battle by offering too small an increase will get people talking about just how successful Ryanair really is today. People will wonder why such a supposedly well-run company can't afford to pay enough to convince Aer Lingus shareholders to sell. Remember, the fund managers didn't sell either - and they don't give a damn about competition and regional development.

I'm just doing some Ryanair style advertising. Y'know - start a controversy, get people roaring at each other, then sit back and have a larf.
Make sure to get the sales pitch across though!

    Its fun.
    Try it!
