Fare increases for the new year

LUAS tickets are to cost around 5 per cent more and Dublin Bus fares will increase by 10 cent for an adult and 5 cent for a child.
Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey said the rise is necessary in the current economic climate.

    Public transport costs increase

Do his government partners in the Green party agree with him?

or because you've been cutting subsides to Dublin Bus and raising fares to correspond to those cuts every year since you guys entered govt? could that be the real reason Noel?

Lucky we have the Green party in office, in 2007 their manefesto promised:

    provide a simple €1 €2 and €3 euro charging
    system for city bus services;
John will surely veto this proposal and introduce this common sense zoning system, have no fear commuters...

This is yet another policy that will hit the low paid in our economy. The Greens will do as they are told by FF, so they will support this in full.

This is nothing other than a tax increase.

Surely to god it's tax decreases we need in order to stimulate activity in the economy?

The average man's wage is now being spent on mortgage, food, gas & electricity, petrol/diesel, health/car insurance and childrens shoes/clothing.

There's damn all left to pay for luxuries like restaurants, holidays, a nice suit, new motor, etc.

    It'll be water charges next.

If its only 5 or 10 cents they dont they lower it by that amount?

How many people are employed by the CIE group that do nothing? How many managers are there? Is there anythin perforamce related in this increase?

Has anybody seen the system that they use in real countries where there is a digital display telling you how long till the bus will arrive? Ever wonder why we dont have it here? Simple, the hard workers of Dublin Bus dont want it because it means their performance can be monitored.

A particular disgrace regarding Dublin Bus considering that oil prices have more than halved in the last year. They know they can get away with it because there is no competition in the Dublin Bus market.

what i love is the throughly intensive advertising campaign to back it up.

    yup, nothing.

first most people heard of this was getting on the bus this morning. driver didnt even bother asking people for the differnce, which now seems to be an annual event.

would it really KILL dublin bus to put a poster on the bus the week before the increase comes in to affect so people could get accustomed to it?

as it is once again the first notice on these price rises goes up on the day its in effect and on the bus i was on was about the size of a A4 page.

we all knew this was being flagged since before christmas so how come theyre so slow to react? ya think by now theyd have a strategey

The fare increase on Limerick buses is over 10%, or over three times the current rate of inflation. I thought that one of the few good things about having the Greens in government would be a move to get more people using public transport. Obviously I was wrong, there isn't a single good thing about having these wasters in government.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

I wouldn't be surprised if prices were being increased in order to facilitate future competition. Private enterprise probably couldn't compete with Dublin Bus at current prices and so in order to create a profitable market in which private operators can "compete", prices will have to be raised across the board.
