Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann to seek 20% fare increases: SBP

A fuel rebate for bus transport of 34.5p per litre, by both public and private companies, is coming to an end in November at the direction at the EU. Plus the increase in oil and other costs means that Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann will be applying for a circa 20% increase in fares by the end of the year. With the current state of the public finances the Minister will not be able to increase the level of subvention so it looks as if commuters are in for a hefty fares hike.

Don't business interests get tax breaks when they don't turn a profit?

Anyway at least it just helps drive another nail in the coffin of any chance of a 2nd Referendum making it through...

Yes, let's cripple public transit. Petroleum based transportation is the way of the future. Isn't that why we ripped up all the train and tram tracks since the Brits left?

That's the idea - the EU is against public ownership - it wants private operators to take over and turn a profit - and guess who's going to pay for that?
