    Limerick Tunnel open day tomorrow

ATTN transport nerds: There's an open day tomorrow for the €500m Limerick Tunnel project. They are about to sink the prefab tunnel sections and are having a public viewing of the project.

Some good info on the website: http://www.limericktunnel.com/openday.html

Indeed, better go to that so - if its open as much as the Dublin one, we may never get another chance!

I was sorry I couldn't make it. It's a great idea, and may inspire a lot of children who attend to consider civil engineering as a career. That, and it's just cool. The Tunnel Under the Shannon project is badly needed, and will be an important part of the burgeoning Atlantic Corridor. More power to all involved, I say.

    Yes.

Solving the problem of 2 hour queuing at the existing bridges is such a waste of money.
Moving traffic out of the city is such a waste of money.
Sorting out traffic flow is such a waste of money.

As a Limerick man, I'll tell you where the money is wasted. A Bridge would have been quicker to build, cheaper, and cheaper to maintain. They build a tunnel so as not to interfere with the tiny volume of large ships using Limerick port. A few months after construction began, it was announced that Limerick port would be closed and operations would be moved to Foynes.

They could have built a bridge and saved a few hundred million.

As a Clare man living in Limerick for 13 years I am a little confused.

Where exactly woudl you have built the bridge ?
Have you seen how much the river widens as you move out towards mungret ?

A long bridge is still cheaper than a long tunnel. They could have built it in exactly the same place and saved about 50% of the price. The reason they didn't is that the bridge would have to be very high to allow access to Limerick port to cargo ships. But they are closing Limerick Port soon anyway, so what was the point of the extra expense of a tunnel?
