M6 motorway to Athlone opens tomorrow

1:30pm tomorrow. From then on 45 minutes will be cut off the journey from Dublin - Galway. The motorway is 30km's long and will join the recently completed N6 at Kilbeggan.

it's not a motorway yet though. Is it gonna be reclassified?

This scheme consists of 29 km of high quality dual carriageway which runs from the Kilbeggan grade separated interchange at the end of the N6 Phase 1 bypassing Kilbeggan, Horseleap and Moate on the existing N6 and tying into the existing Athlone Bypass.

    is this it?

We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

    It doesn't look very straight

A more direct route south of Athlone would have been much shorter and would have been more sustainable as far as fuel consumption goes.

    More builders out of work
Fianna Fail will allow the Irish People, to me milked like Milch Cows, by the CIF through high house prices, rents, and land prices, at the expense of competitiveness, and quality of life. FF+CIF=1

At least Moate will be bypassed. Took me an hour to get through that town on Saturday. Ended up being late for a wedding, thankfully communion was on so nobody noticed.

yeh something to do with God not making the land to accommodate road engineers. Perhaps there were more considerations than mere straightness like gee I dunno, geology, hydrology, flora fauna, SAC, SPA, land ownership patterns, integration with the N80 and N52, drainage, settlement patterns etc etc - just off the top of the head like

At least it will make the toll charge worth the money.

I bet the people of Moate will be pleased too.

    Its a motorway all right.

Signage is all blue and its labelled 'M6' on signs. It might technically not be yet but will be before the end of the year I think.

no excuse - just plan them right through shops, houses etc (and to hell with extra CPO and other costs)-- as the crow flies - only way to go
