    Road Deaths down 15%

Road deaths Jan - April 2008 were 102 which was a 15% reduction on 2007.

Clearly Govt targeting of reducing road deaths is working.

Absolutely, that's why we need more responsible drivers on our roads.

Why do we measure road safety in terms of deaths? Should we not measure it in terms of accidents?

Just because 8 people are killed in one accident and 3 people are killed in 3 different accidents doesn't mean the latter marks an improvement on the first?

The number of accidents (collisions) is at 95, down from 113 to this point last year.
It is unclear what is producing the reduction in road fatalities, possibily a reduction in the no. of provisional and drunk drivers on the roads together with the general improvement in the road surfaces (more motorways). It is excellent news nonetheless. At least 23 people, going by the Garda statistics, are alive today due to the increase in road safety since last year...

Reduction in deaths is welcome. KSI* statistics should become the focus now.

Drivers require a medical certificate to obtain a driving licence. Incapable drivers should not be on the road whether as a result of alcohol or a medical condition. Drivers with a physical disability of course can often overcome these difficulties by modifying their vehicles.
