Car drivers would be nicer if they didn't pollute so much.

"One pollutant alone (particulate matter) from traffic has been estimated to cause 17 600 premature deaths, 18 700 respiratory and cardiovascular hospital admissions, and many other less serious adverse health outcomes annually in France alone"

My problem isn't with cyclists per se, it's with people who are a menace on the road because they ignore the rules. In my unbiased experience cyclists are less likely to obey the RotR than motorists. That's not down to superior virtue on the part of motorists but because some motoring rules are enforced while cyclists get a free pass. Motoring rules that aren't enforced or are enforced so infrequently that it amounts to not enforcing them are ignored too.

You'd have to be extremely unlucky to be done for tailgating, undertaking, crossing continuous white lines, stopping on motorways, parking on footpaths or driving with defective lights so there's low compliance.

I suspect that for many cyclists that sense of moral superiority underpins the indignation with which they greet any suggestion that they should observe the law.

I do think many rules of the road should not apply for cyclists. There are instances when cycling when ignoring lights can be perfectly safe. Certain types of junctions offer no danger to cyclists making certain maneuvers. I also don't believe it's the end of the world for cyclists to go up one way streets. This offers no greater an obstruction or danger to cyclists or cars than a pedestrian walking on the street.

I cycled for 2 years in the suburbs of dublin, to and from work and I used foot paths because I simply did not feel safe cycling on the roads. I used signalling, I didn't break lights and cycled according to the law, but motorist showed absolutely no respect for my safety so I was forced to use the footpaths.
That's the sort of attitude that gives cyclists a bad name. You don't like the rules so you don't bother obeying them. Not alone that but you get hysterical at the mere thought that you should obey them.

Cycling on the footpath is against the RotR but you're happy to boast that you did it for 2 years and worse you have the cheek to claim that you cycled according to the law.

You weren't forced to use the footpath you chose to use it thereby putting pedestrians at risk. You want motorists to obey the rules and have respect for you but you refuse to obey the rules and have no regard for the safety of others. You are the very epitome of the menace cyclist.

When on the road, I obeyed the rules of the road but because of the excessive dangers I generally kept to the foot paths. I don't boast about the fact, I use it as a point. I cycled on the footpath because of how unsafe I felt on the road, even though doing so was substantially slower.

I have plenty regard for the safety of others, my using the footpath did not automatically put pedestrians at risk. Where there were cycle lanes I cycled on them, where there were not I refused to cycle on the road for safety reasons.

My point through out has been that the rules of the road governing cyclists are idiotic. Either roads must be changed to accommodate cyclists properly or the rules changed to reflect the difference between the two modes of transport.

You are not "unbiased". You clearly have an axe to grind against cyclists and many of the comments you have made in this thread have been greatly mis-informed. Many others have been complete lies.
