I drive and cycle around Dublin and I find that I have much better hearing on the bike than in the car. I think it's to do with cars having an engine, windows and a roof.

And I hate motorists as they cannot drive. Most cannot navigate a simple roundabout nevermind other traffic.Originally Posted by NotDevsSon
I also hate other cyclists though. Any eejit without a helmet and lights...
As for listening to music, thet is a complete no-no in my opinion. most cyclists do not have mirrors so the only way to safely gauge what is behind you is to use your ears.

I was once apprehended by the Gardaí for cycling while drunk. Though it was more to do with the fact that it wasn't my bicycle I was cycling.

Btw I motorcycle, with ear-plugs, and cycle with an mp3 player. So I suppose I should be banned for life.

Christ this is fabulous stuff. Cyclists pose little threat to anyone in the urban environment but themselves. It's fcking car drivers, truck drivers and taxi drivers that kill people. This 15% of cyclsist stop at red lights "fact" is absolute cock as well. In any case pedestrians break their lights all the bloody time. we all do it, we all run out through the middle of streets rather than going to the crossing etc but where's the I hate Pedestrians thread. bad driving, esp taxi drivers in conjunction with dangerous junction designs by backward engineers create a hostile environment for the BEST mode of transport in urban areas.
However, it is completely unacceptable and indefensible for cycling the wrong way up a one way street. It is totally unacceptable for cyclits to break the lights and it is absolutely disgraceful that people cycle on footpaths in busy pedestrian areas.
There is a National Cycle Policy being prepared at the moment as is the long long long overdue DTO Cycle provision manual. A few points on this:
- We require cycle training for all schoolkids in all schools and the option for adults
- A 30 kph speed limit to create calmed areas in the city at specific locations
- The removal of car based engineers from road design duties, esp junctions
- Quality cycle provision instead of obsession with no. of kms
- Maintenance of facilties
- Reinstatement of them properly after works
- Clear legislation on things like lights, helmets, bells, hi -vis etc
- Public bikes in all major towns and cities
- The ability to bring bikes on trains and buses
- Sheltered secure bike parking at all public transport and all major employment uses
- Contra flow cycle lanes on streets like Baggot Street/Merrion Row
etc
etc
It'll all be in the policy I'm sure
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.
The cycle lanes where i live are never used, these people cycle in rows of 3 and take up a whole lane of trafiic in a 60mph zone.
They simply dont care that there are huge lines of traffic behind them.
It bugs the crap out of everyone.
If im cycling and theres a huge wide cycle lane on the side of the road you could be damn sure i'd use it.
I would never cycle on the road, attention seekers the lot of them!
Abstinence makes the Church grow fondlers.

(Oh and BTW there was at least 50 yards of empty road in front of him because of the jam he was causing. Eventually a guard on a motorbike had to order him to pull over to the cycle lane to clear a jam stretching way down Church Street, buses all late for their stops, etc, all caused by one f*cker.)
