    Road safety authority suggestion...

Why don't these guys come up with a national list, road by road (start now, job for life) with their audit / recommendations for markings, bollards, missing signs, bad corners etc etc. etc. publish it and embarrass the authorities into creating proper roads.

In fact, any entity / body could do this - with enough moral authority.

I wonder would Conor Faughnan or similar come on board as a mouthpiece.

Anyone who has an accident on a piece of road that was picked out in such a fashion might then have another stick to beat the local council with if it was done right and force them to act.....

    Well?
That's complete nonsense. I disagree with you.

We need a road safety audit done on a year by year basis

would the insurance companies pay a levy to an independent organisation which would:

    1) Measure surface friction of carraige way pavements.

    2) Report on sightlines encroached and obscured

    3) trees in a dangerous condition

    4) bad road signage

    5 ) inappropriate signage

    6) subsided undulating surfaces

    Etc

It's a good idea. I'm not sure if The AA have the interests of the common motorist at heart though.

The NRA do audits but probably not the same style.

But god knows where you get the results, stripped of the technical mumbo jumbo and presentable the public....

Effectively that's self-evaluation by the NRA. An independent audit would be nice.

Why would insurance companies do anything of the sort?
I tiny fraction of accidents are caused by road conditions. And in cases where road conditions were a factor the major fault still rests with driver error.

like everything else, an independent regulator is needed.

    e.g. I don't know what a traffic cone is.
