    Airline Industry is overrated

Because the security causes so many delays, I've decided to never fly again, unless I get a private plane.

one of the reasons i let my passport lapse for 3 years is i honestly couldnt face dublin airport.

and ive resolved never to fly to the states because of the draconian measures theyve instituted, if i want to be treated like a criminal i'd break the law

Is this thread about air travel -as it seems from the OP, or about airline security - as it seems from the second post?

Because the title has damn all to do with either.

And neither has much to do with the airline industry and how it's overrated.

well i presume its because virtually all the media says half the country is legging it to foreign shores practically every second week.

remember the whole "four holidays a year" speil a while back? usually it was connected to how cheap air fares are. therefore the airline industry

im not saying alot of people dont do that but a significant number just cant stomach whats involved anymore. the ferry companies are actively advertising on what a hassle it is now

So have you invented some type of car that can float on water? Because last time I checked Ireland was an island and given that you can only get off this island by 2 forms of transport, air and sea, you don't exactly have much choice. Its easy to look at countries like France and Germany and say how much of a great road and rail system they have and how much of a great alternative it is to flying, but again they're not an island. So you can either go by sea with the choice of about 6 destinations, or you can fly with the choice of hundreds.

Firstly, the opening poster lives in the US, as far as I know. But secondly, that's just not true. I took my girlfriend to Prague last year (by sea and rail) and we're going to Paris again this year by much the same route. You can get to anywhere on mainland Asia if you have the time, as well. Most destinations outside of the Americas and Australia are reachable by rail once you get to the UK, and you can get anywhere by ship (but that can take stupid amounts of time). (Here's a great site for planning out your route.)

I would rather get to Ireland by ship.

There are cars that can float on water but it would not make it across the atlantic, unless it got 200+ MPG on water

If you lived in London you would be a fool to fly to Paris, the train is SO SO nice and by the time you get through airport security and check in you are in Paris.

Indeed. The Eurostar's great. You can get to Paris in about twelve hours from Dublin or Dún Laoighaire. Considering it's over five hours to Paris by air, it's fairly competitive.
