Maybe the Government should get a team of engineers to look into the

possiblity and practicality of building a tunnel or bridge from Ireland to the UK.

I am a Civil Engineer with experience of hard rock tunnelling and marine works. The whole idea is nuts - just about enough credibility for the occasional Sunday Times article.

Note to Minister of Transport Please send CHF 1,000,000 to Bank of Ticino, Airolo, Switzerland.

No. The Channel Tunnel has become a magnet for illegal immigration into the UK. Remember the Sangatte camp some yrs ago that was close to the tunnel and the frequent attempts by many of its inhabitants to get through security.

I'll take your word for it then-a land bridge probably isn't feasible.

That was mainly due to the idiotic proximity of the camp to the Tunnel and in particular the train lines. The problem is not so great now that the camp has been closed.

Symonds, who built the Oresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden, proposed a prefab seabed tunnel for the Irish Sea. They wouldn't try cutting through rock, as with the Channel Tunnel.

And we'd have to build an 80km bridge to reach the UK. Its not impossible, and it would be really cool in 50 years. But first i want a functioning transport system on this island.
