Turning up for a Driving Test after Tuesday - who with?

My driving test will take place next Thursday.

Since no full license holder that I know will be free - or allowed - to accompany me to the test centre, I shall have to, conscientiously, cancel my test.

    Only I won't.

When I turn up at the test centre unaccompanied, will I have failed before ever I even step inside the building?

As I understand, the enforcers for the law are the Garda, and the test centres are not run by the Garda. So it should not lead to failing the test. But theoretically they can place a Garda at the test centre, to catch all who arrive or depart unaccompanied and prosecute.

if you fail you'll have to walk home too.

    How likely is that?

To think - actually turning up to take a test that would possible lead to one more evil provisional licence holder being taken off the road could lead to a 1000 euro fine. I'm livid. For the first time, I'm politically livid.

Even if you passed you'd have to walk home because you don't get the licence straight away.

So the law states that you cant drive with a provisional license if someone accompanies you?

Thats madness, this is the daftest law in Ireland since window tax.

You get a certificate of competence (or incompetence(!) if you fail), to tide you over.
People who have wanted to get their test done have had plenty of chances. At the height of the >1 year delays for a test in Dublin, I applied and did my test at a country test centre, in less than 3 months. The waiting times for all test centres are available online.
And yes, the test here is ridiculously easy, compared to the one in Australia. They have an excellent system over there, which we appear to be copying (theory tests, learner, provisional and full licences, etc).
There will be some pain, then we'll all benefit from the imporvements, like the smoking ban. Bit of a cack-handed introduction, but three cheers from me for this.
