    Protest Against New Driving Regulations

I think there needs to be some sort of protest against the new driving regulations as they are unworkable and show complete disregard for young people.

Might I suggest that everyone on a provsional licence drives to the local Motor tax Office on Tuesday to compain about the new regulations.

I am sure someone with more imagination than me can think of something more eyecatching.

Given that 10,000 people marched in Limerick so their bosses wouldn't have to take a train from Stansted to Heathrow, surely something must be done so half of rural Ireland doesn't have to walk to work.

Next Tuesday morning is probably a little to early to mobilise people, but certainly within the next fortnight.

This is an absolutely crazy decision, and should be resisted.

I hope the 450,000 provisional license holders get themselves registered in advance of the Local Elections in 2009

    Tempted

I would really like to join you, and agree that some kind of protest should happen. I'm concerned that as a provisional driver, if I drive to protest then I'm giving the government an invite to fine me. After all, I can't get there without a fully licenced driver and I don't have one handy!

I think that the protest should be more positive. After all, we're not against the regulations per se. Maybe a protest against the waiting times, and the manner in whihc this has happened would garner more public support

"Protest against Test Waiting times" i reckon would be better
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

I say drive to the protest, even if it means being stopped and fined, and then refuse to pay the fine.. all the way to court

Lets see how the Government reacts when hundreds of thousands of generally law abiding voters are being threathened with jail, for being unable to get to work/school etc

The next question that should be asked, is was this measured implemented yesterday, to take public attention off the massive pay rises that the Government awarded themselves ?

RoC: what fine? You're the one that should know that answer as you have been campaigning on this... what is the legal basis for the threatened huge fines, and for the ban on unaccompanied driving on the 2nd provisional?

The law on penalty points and fines (which could be enacted by the Minister at any time) says 1 penalty point and something like 50 Euro. The Road Traffic Act said one can drive unaccompanied on a 2nd provisional. Can laws now be changed by the Government?

Also, would it be possible to actually sue the Government over test waiting times?

I'm in agreement with this. I don't have a problem with the law in principal, just the waiting times. The fact that I have to wait it completely out of my control.

Sorry to go off-topic but I was in Limerick that day and there might have been 2,500 at a push.
We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when creating them
