    Luas Link-up/Metro North overlap

Simple question here: the two lines cover the same area between Stephens Green and O'Connell, so why not save money by taking the best bits from both and combining them. Here is a map of the current plan:

And here is the simpler idea without the luas, and with differrent metro stops:

I don't understand the point of having both lines, and especially the looping luas section. Seems like a waste of good money.

Well, the Dawson Street stop is much handier for Leinster House and the Marlborough Street stop much handier for the Department of Education...

Besides it could be decades before the Metro is even started

It is a waste but it is simply reenforcing the the fact that there will be no link up oppertunities (at least not planned) with the Luas and Metro.

They should run the luas around Temple Bar and connect it to Broadstone Station - which is due to re-open in 2010.

I don't see what all the fuss about linking up the two Luas lines is all about. First, at best the link-up will take 8 minutes, which could easily end up longer given the congestion of the areas you're driving the line through. And the journey takes only about 13 minutes at a brisk walking pace, so barely an improvement. And Metro North will do precisely the same thing, only faster and at greater frequencies.

Second, sending a Luas line down College Green, Westmoreland St and O'Connell st means taking road space away from buses, which are already heavy users. Luas improvements shouldn't involve deteriorations in other forms of public transport.

Investment in these things is all about opportunity costs and prioritisation. I really don't see why this should get priority over the Interconnector, Metros North or West, or the Luas line to Lucan.
