Foreign Registered Vehicles- Is anyone implementing the law?

Before starting, I'd prefer if this thread didn't go into some xenophobic ranting and people accusing each other of racism. I'd prefer to stick to whether anyone is actually implementing the states laws.

Having walked down the Douglas Road in Cork a couple of hours ago, I walked past a builders van. Anyway, this particular van had Austrian plates. However, in the logos on the outside of the van, there were Irish phone numbers and even an Irish address on the side of it. Clearly, this isn't just somebody over visiting family and it's actually being used to conduct business in Ireland.

Now, we have laws about registering a vehicle in Ireland if it's being permanentlt imported, but has anyone ever been prosecuted for failing to do so?

A neighbour of mine, a Scottish interior decorator, received a "visit" at home 6 months ago to remind him to re-register his yellow-reg car and pay the requisite VRT; he claims a client (or neighbours of same) blew the whistle on him to Revenue.

Good! There are many people evading this one. Cars with northern plates abound in Dublin yet the owners aren't driving northwards every night. No fewer than 6 northern reg cars are in my area. I haven't worked out where they live or else I would be grabbing my whistle.

So you are quite happy that they are getting away with paying our obscene road tax levels while you and I have to are you?

This law needs to be implemented but has not been for a long time. I used to work with a number of Eastern Europeans who returned home for a week to buy a car, insure it in Poland, bring it over here and happy days, they never get stopped or asked any questions and avoid having to pay car tax or insurance or VRT.

As i understand the law allows for foreign visitors to bring their cars to Ireland for a maximum period of 3 months without registering them. But most of them are well aware that this law is never implemented. Their 'insurance' is not valid in this country, yet the Garda seem more interested in bothering the young Irish drivers who are paying an absalute fortune trying to keep a car on the road.

Judas! I know someone from the UK who's been driving UK reg cars here for over 4 years, even got a new one last year!

A quick look around Dundalk will show more NI number plates than ROI ones.

As long as this government continues to drag their feet on common penalty points between Ireland and the UK, the incentive will be too great for a lot of people.

When you add the ridiculous VRT poll tax to this, it becomes a no-brainer.
