Govt Shannon intervention 'inappropriate" - Govt

The Irish Times has just reported that the Government will not intervene on the Shannon-Healthrow Aer Lingus link issue, arguing that a government intervention would be "inappropriate" and "damaging to the company".

Well te government needs something to be unpopular about at this time of the Dail term. I mean could you imagine it...a govt that was consistantly popular. I mean god...what would we talk about?

If Willie O'Dea had any balls he would resign. He won't of course. FFers don't do resignations on policy matters, just personality clashes.

Well, no. Remember, the good people of Galway were being poisoned and voted FF. Most commuter counties, the ones where people buy cars with trays and spoon holders to eat the cornflakes with while stuck in traffic, they voted FF. The people of Kerry, where every last field, and some of the foreshore, seems to be being built on, they voted FF. RoC, lets face it, FF have some sort of hold over the population. Im baffled, but there it is... This will have no longterm effect on the voting habits of the people affected by it as they will stick with nurse for fear of worse.

Indeed. And don't forget Cavan-Monaghan and hospital services.

After what happened in 2007, I'm betting FF assume they will get away with this in 2012 like they got away with Bertiegate in this election. I expect another strong protest vote in 2009 though but they probably feel it's a price worth paying. Regarding the principle of the thing, I agree the govt should not intervene. To do so would set a bad example and frighten multinational investors into thinking we might be embarking on a round of Big Government involving greater state interfering in the private-sector. Shannon needs to cut its landing charges and find other parterns - maybe Cityjet if media reports are true. The overdependence on one company is a relic of a discredited, semi-state past.

FF know after the last election that they can practically get away with anything once they keep away from the old adage of being found with a "live boy or a dead girl in their bed."

Without some detail this isn't really deserving of a separate thread. Was there a cabinet meeting? Who announced the policy decision? What alternative course has the government decided upon?

Why is the government lobbying the European Commission to prevent Ryanair taking over Aer Lingus, because of the Dublin route??? Is it that Dublin is more special than others?
