There are ways of asking - for example, "Where are you from originally"? This question can be asked of any driver, male or female, Irish and non-Irish, it is a good way to start and conversation and very often enable driver and passenger to establish common ground. Such as from the same locality, know somebody from the same locality, shared interest in sports, music, theatre, etc.
..as a dub who worked on building sites around the city for 20 years and thought i knew my way around, i had to sit the area knowledge test twice in order to pass because it was so specific on knowing the geography of Dublin, so how someone whos not familiar with the city and county is able to pass is beyond me.....
It's beyond me too. I have experienced foreign taxi drivers in Dublin who could barely understand English, let alone being able to find where I asked them to go without detailed instructions like "next left", "next right" etc. I find it hard to believe that these people have actually passed a test to demonstrate their familiarity with the city. Either all these people were unlicensed, or there is something very peculiar about the way they were tested.
garda should increase check points.... if that true !!
