You buy a car for 1,000 quid in the UK, try to import it into ireland , and the VRT tax in ireland is often more than the total value of the vehicle. Its Insane.
    .
regarding the road tax, why not tax a vehicle per emissions PER PASSENGER ? thus a 3 litre sports vehicle which sits 2 people pays more tax than, say, a 3 litre people carrier which can lug 8 people about the place ? We should encourage economy and we should tax luxury.

Motor tax should be on fuel price only. Get taxed for what you use. A 3 litre sports vehicle which sits 2 and sits in garage most of year and does maybe 50 or 100 miles a year is taxed more than a 3 litre people carrier which can lug 8 people about the place every day doing 10,000+ miles a year.

Andy4571 , That has been discussed to destruction on here. It isn't viable as it penalises those who have to commute by car due to poor public transport etc. People have to travel to where the jobs are and that pretty much means the major urban conurbations.

We paid 1.25 billion today to anonymous international market speculators. Road tax is paying just a fraction of that. There needs to be 20 taxes similar to road tax, broadcast charge etc. in order to keep paying the bondholders. Just watch out for the footpath tax and the new bicycle tax and of course the proposed lawn mowing charge.

and why are we still being screwed if you pay 3 months or 6 months.
The argument was that there was more paperwork. Last time i checked tho there is no paper involved if you pay online!

ireland - a sparsely populated land which lacks the Public transport infrastructure of most countries in the Western World. But that does have the highest taxed motoring costs in the universe. Maybe its a consipiracy to stem the Obesity epidemic ? Make us all walk

I still dont see why someone who needs a car for odd journeys has to pay up to €1000 a year if they cant afford a new one with low C02 emissions post 2008, and yet someone who does 100 times more mileage per year can be paying €200. Not fair either.

There IS NO MOTOR INDUSTRY - there is only a retail car sales industry - get it right. They are crap.

are you so naive you believe the emissions crap? people bought into that idea, and because cars are too efficient........they upped the charge. the lowest emissions got the furthest raise in car tax.

I did not believe anything about emissions crap, I am meerly pointing out that those that have not bought new cars are getting hammered by motor tax, even if they do little mileage.
