Varadkar: State to sell Aer Lingus stake

Minister Varadkar interviewed on Newstalk this morning & said some changes to the structure of semi states due in the October but not agreed by cabinet yet.

He was more blunt about Aer Lingus saying the 25% stake would likely be sold as after review he didn't see it as strategic anymore.

I wonder will they sell to Ryanair. Did he give any indication of value?

No indication where or how it would be sold.

Seemed to be hinting about other aviation changes but because of the DAAs debt any sale would mean just mean paying off some of their debt so not as clear cut.

Well, based on the market cap. of Aer Lingus of €339m today, the state's stake of 25% is worth €85m.

Don't think they can - the European Commission has already blocked Ryanair owning Aer Lingus on competition grounds.

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.

Indeed. It can't be sold to ryanair. Additionally, they can build into the condition of sale certain provisions relating to retaining certain routes etc, one would have thought. I don't have a problem.

Getting rid of the DAA, ie privatizing it, would be far more important, perhaps retaining some minority shareholding.
    dent and NorthWest like this.

Hardly worth the fees attached to the sale, is it?
