question for dublin cyclists - zilch to do with politics

OK, I know this has not much to do with p.ie but...

I'm thinking of taking a train trip down to Dublin to buy a new pedal bike - there's not much choice out west.

Where do you intrepid Dublin bikers recommend to buy one, short of carrying on to Holland? A good gent's road bike, no suspension, not a mountain bike, up to a grand, good gearset for mainly flat roads, straight handlebars.

Which places have the best choice?

Got mine in Penny Farthing on Camden Street. Seriously considered one from Commuting Solutions in Rathmines.

I'm a few years out of Dublin, but hopefully that place in Parnell street is still there where I got my trusty old Specialised Crossroads. Across the road from the ILAC. Can't remember the name.

Find out when the next Garda auction is on in Kevin Street. I hear they usually have lots of bikes for sale at bargain prices.

    david,

i recently purchased a Eurotrek Amazon, its your plain vanilla mountain bike sans shock absorbers etc. it is carbon steel and quite good for cycling around the suburbs.

if i was buying another, i would definately buy an aluminium frame one (much lighter).

i think Dawes (bike brand) have a gents city bike for about Eur250-300 thats quite good (with aluminium frame). my local bike shops (ferris wheels in booterstown and stillorgan cycles) both stock them so think you can get them anywhere.

on another note. i have been putting in a lot of miles on the bike recently (saving money and trying to get fit) and the cycle tracks on the N11 are an absolute disgrace. i'm going to raise it with every candidate on the doorstep. basically whenever there are road works, the road is finished to a high standard (smooth) but a pack of cimpanzees with baseball gloves seem to lay the tarmac on the cycle lane. not only are they full of glass and debris and stormdrains but cars seem to mistake them for parking spaces (have been tempted to leave a muddy wheel track on the roof of each car i encounter!)

Just a thought: some places won't guarantee a bike unless you bring it back after a month for a free service.

Cycleways on Parnell Street and Cyclelogical on Bachelors Walk are both good. You should spend as much as you can afford for the bike, as under €1000, every €100 you spend makes a huge difference to the quality of the bike. After €1000, the rate of improvement slows down.

I presume you will be coming into Heuston Station. Just a short(ish) taxi ride to Eurocycle on the Long Mile Road, they have a huge selection across the price range. Should find what you seek there. Good staff too.

    Cant find a website tho.

Cycleways on Parnell Street are very good.

My bike was stolen recently and I got a new one in Hollingsworth Bicycles in Stillorgan, they were good too.
