This kind of thing really irritates me - a person who genuinely either forgets to tag on or is not sure whether they have tagged on or not is fined €45.00 and junkies, alcoholics and all sorts of scumbags get away without ever paying a fare. I have seen this happen regularly as I travel on the luas every day to and from work. The ticket inspectors are afraid to challenge these scumbags and they don't even throw them off the tram. I was on the Luas one afternoon when a lady had a drink poured over her for daring to complain to a person for drinking alcohol on the tram.

I don't find this hard to believe. I took issue with the inspector because on my journey into town the person I was travelling with and I went to sit on a pair of frea seats. Two young fella's, members of a particular allegedy nomadic group who are protected in our state, had their feet across the seats. My fellow passenger tried to move closer, assuming the young fell'as hadn't noticed us. I thought they were just being ignorant, so I said "Do you mind?" at which point I was told "Yeah, I do." by one of the youths.
I turned and muttered "F-ing ass holes" (Not an exact quote) before going to find another seat. one of the youths then shouted at me, "who you calling a f-ing knacker". I just ignored him, having made my point, and saying anything else would have been redundant.
I brought this up with the inspector, saying, why don't you guys do your job? Where were you when me, a paying customer, was having to put up with some dick head on the luas?
Apologies for my language but that's exactly what he was.
