It's not my job to police drink-drivers: Publican - Courts, National News - Independent.ie
    It's a pity we don't have self-regulation for publicans really isn't it?

I was a barman for years and in my experience anyone who believes they can drive safely after four pints would certainly drive after ten.

A publican is in business to sell drink. Why should a publican have to mind how much drink someone is consuming unless they are becoming antisocial? Sure if a customer is in need of a lift then by all means ring a taxi for them. What ever happened to personal responsibility or is there no such thing anymore?

One of the biggest features of the latest drink driving statistics is the number of pedestrians who are now being killed on the roads. According to the statistics, many of these are over 40 years old.

How many of these people are elderly people trying to walk home on a country road after having a couple of pints?

This is the law of unintended consequences in action.

Hypothetical situation - 70 year old man used to have 2 pints in his local and drive back to his farm
Now because he's not able to drive after 2 pints, he has 4 pints and a whiskey and tries to walk home, hoping to get a lift from someone he knows. An elderly person walking home on a dark, narrow country road is in very serious danger, add a couple of pints into the mix and you're definitely going to see fatalities.

Do we really have to base all our legislation and planning around the assumption that the population in general cannot function without the dangerous drug alcohol?

In this country walking on narrow country road, perfectly sober and in broad daylight, can be extremely dangerous due to the number of idiots who speed along with no regard for who or what might be around the next sharp bend.

As a non drinker and not a publican, I think it is overdone. Some people i know in rural areas who used go out and 3 or 4 pints all their lives are not bound in their houses . It was a great occasion for a bachelor maybe living alone, go out and have a drink or two, a game of cards and sit by a good fire. They are now terrified and wasting away, no taxis to be had and they were never a threat, unlike boy racers who drive mad every night doing circles on the road where you can see the remains of rubber, and no garda bothers them as they are in contact with one another if a garda car is in the area. And gardai have lost touch with the people, they will hardly speak to you. I know of a woman who never drinks was held up a week ago and made blow into the bag. The gardai are just one trick ponies now, revenue collectors, and do not concentrate on robbers, boy racers, or those who drive with drugs on them, that is now a bigger problem than drink, same with tiredness.
You'd think Kenny committed Treason and brought in IMF. Cowen had all in stitches in Galway at 3.30a.m.but he was "not impaired" -DD Power. FF=Publican páirtí an IMF.

    No taxis to be had????
My next door neighbour used to be a builder and taxi driver. Now he's just a taxi driver. I'd be surprised if he wasn't part of a very strong trend.
