Those who say that drink driving laws are destroying rural life and causing loneliness for the elderly should look at this case. We're frequently told how auld fellas driving home after a few pints do no harm and it's the young fellas doing all the damage. People like Gay Byrne actively demonise young male drivers and give drivers like the guilty party in this case a carte blanche to disassociate themselves from blame.

Meanwhile we're told that self-regulation is working. It would do no harm to see a few more publicans sued for harm occasioned to or by their patrons.

    Good post, thank you

six pints over 4 hours, you could still be under the limit at that.

Not PC to say so but I would have no problem with driving a few miles on a country road with 3 pints on board.

Thats not true, depends on many factors. some people could drink one pint an hour for several hours and be under the limit within an hour after stopping drinking.

If you had to take an exam to keep your job would you have 3 pints before it?

they are collisions not accidents, accident assumes no one is to blame,if you drive down a windy road at 80mph lose control and crash into some poor person who is driving within the speed limit you are to blame and should be punished accordingly, the 24 hour closures are sometimes due to the gardai searching for missing body parts that have been flung everywhere in the collision
