They said this "Many public sector employees appeared to use the strike as an extra day off, with traffic jams reported on roads towards Northern Ireland's cheaper shopping centres".

Followed by "Unions have called off strikes in some areas to battle floods caused by heavy rain."

    Hardly a damning indictement

But I'll reiterate, what PS workers do after they have done their strike duty is nobodies business but their own.

They have withdrawn their labour they werent getting paid, what would you have them do, go home and hide behind the couch for the rest of the day. Only the most obtuse and vehemently anti PS goons cannot understand this. Reuters readership are not that stupid.

This morning's Indo - "Public sector workers were last night accused of taking advantage of the nationwide strike which all but shut down the country." (Strike for the Border as shoppers flee North - National News, Frontpage - Independent.ie)

",,, all but shut down the country" ???

I'm not sure how others here fared yesterday, but for me, yesterday was a standard working and living day - our Bins were collected, as usual - our post was delivered, as usual - our electricity, phones and Internet (which I use to work from home over the VPN) functioned as usual, petrol station, local shop, butcher, etc all open and functioning as usual. I had a full 10 hours or so of work to do, no disruption at all.

So "... all but shut down the country"? - this Public Sector day of protest did nothing of the sort I would imagine for a huge majority of the general public and majority of Private Sector employees or companies. And I would believe another strike day tomorrow week will only further prove how a country continues to function efficiently despite the withdrawal of public services for 1 day per week.

It would appear that the Irish Public have already and will further draw their own conclusions on this despite the counter-claims of the Public Sector unions.

Not a successful day for the Public Sector by any stretch of the imagination.

Considering the available evidence, the amount of invalid conclusions in this thread is staggering. All the irrational hallmarks of a racist lynchmob are here. I suggest it be converted into a sticky and read as a test piece in bizarre reactionary witch huntery.

Bigotry is the currency of this type of nonsense talk. Old fashioned bigotry. Allowing yourselves to be manipulated in this manner by a demonstrably corrupt Government. To turn so viciously on your fellow citizens at the slightest provocation. To ignore the truth so blatently and cloud your mind with hatemongering and bitterness.

You deserve the country you get you short sighted gobschites. I'm through with the lot of you.

However, it is correct to say that the public service workers shopping in Newry contributed handsomely to the private tolling company on the M1.
How do you know that they were Public Service workers, did they have notices on their cars to say so.!!

Fine, I noticed a couple of letters like this in the Indo and the Times as well, Well then, on Dec 3rd well shut it all down, reproduce posts likes this and similar letters on billboards all over the country and we’ll see if you notice then.

    Would you prefer that?

Incidentally, the Indo also said that the PS are being accused of using the strike to go shopping, I presume you have absolutely no problem believing that though eh?

In Sainsburys, trolleys heaved under slabs of beer and boxes of wine. Even a child's pushchair, now minus its occupant, became a repository for bottles of gin, vodka and rum.

"Look at the crowds," said one woman in a distinctive southern lilt.

"Sure every teacher in Ireland is here," replied her friend, somewhat uncharitably.

Kevin, do you mind me asking do you believe that the strikes achieved anything? The PR battle was lost (unfairly). The governments mind has not been changed, and the general public seem to have been unaffected.

What did it achieve beyond letting off steam and securing the position of union leaders?

She knew this how? Isn’t it ironic that everyone asked was a PS worker themselves but posses such intuitive ESP that they could identify PS with a mere glance.

How are you falling for this rubbish?

Kevin, I'm not falling for anything.

These reports show the self-defeating lunacy of yesterday's "day of inaction".
