State to buy out Westlink tollbridge

I predicted some months ago that Bertie and the boys would hand the big investors in NTL a golden handshake(600 million) and then proceed to toll the whole M50.!

Surely this plan will cause fury throughout Dublin.!
Will it drive traffic on to secondary roads right across the city.?
Has any other European nation ever succeeded in creating a "camera toll"
on multiple sections of a relatively short stretch of motorway.?
How will they collect the dosh from foreign tourists, itinerants  and those thousands of motorists who may defy the new stealth tax and wait for the courts to grind to a halt.?
Will this revive the ailing fortunes of "an Post" as hundreds of thousands of bills arrive in the post countrywide.?
Has Martin Cullen plans for a new computer that can deal with the complexity of this incredible exercise.?
Will dishonest motorists tamper with their licence plates as the cross "toll territory"
This sounds to me like the most lunatic and unworkable scheme that this utterly inept government has ever conceived.
More importantly, will the motorists of Dublin vote for this next June.?

We're only talking about mid-'90s technology here, untouchable.

This multiple tolling plan has been a twinkle in the eye of politicians for many years, and was dropped before due to public indignation.
its a very sore point with a lot of commuters.
Its odd that they announce the rebirth of the plan a few months before election day.Surely its going to cost the Soldiers of destiny a few votes though.?
Maybe they feel they have enough in the bag that they can afford it

I have seen one of the solutions. It's not too bad from what I saw.

What they should be doing is multiple tolling at all accesses to the motorway. Everyone should pay once when they drive down the on-ramp, and that's all. It's a good idea to manage the demand on what is a National Route, not a commuter one. And I understand that this is the method favoured by the continuously ignored transport planners. I don't believe they intend motorists to pay multiple tolls, rather a single toll payable by all users at multiple access points

It's not a very complicated scheme. The technology's been around for yonks. But we're talking Martin Cullen and Ahern here so fck knows what donkey-brained fiasco they'll scrawl on a beer mat at Buswells to win an election. But as in the case of the M3 we;re debating the merits and demerits of car transport where even the blindest can see rail is the answer. Get on with MetroWest ffs!!!

However, as you may have read on this forum, I have sarcastically extended an invite to the people of Waterford to come up here and witness the state of our city under Comedy Cullen. And vote the useless, incompetent, garden gnome out of office
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.
