An Invitation to the People of Waterford (Should Cullen Go?)

I'd like to extend a personal invitation to the people of Waterford to visit Dublin City before the general election. Martin Cullen received 8,529 first preference votes in 2002, and I would like those who intend to vote for him again to come up here and see for themselves the utter mess the city has descended into and remains in, under his stewardship of the Departments of the Environment and Transport.

Perhaps people could drive up the N9 and N7 to the south west of the metropolitan area on a wet Monday morning. They could look around the sprawl of Naas, Kildare and Monasterevin that he and Roche have promoted. They could then witness first hand the state of the Red Cow roundabout. Perhaps they mistakenly booked into the Airport Hilton in Darndale and require a quick orbit of the western and northern outskirts.

There they could witness the gross failings of environmental and transport policies for themselves, as they crawl mind numbingly slowly to their destinations. Perhaps by then, the sign at Ballymun saying "Ireland's first IKEA coming 2008" will be visible from the gridlock. Thanks Dick. Cheers Martin.

Then they could look around at the poor red faced folks, on the edge of cardiac episodes, whose cars are laden down with luggage on their way to the unmitigated disaster that is Dublin Airport. A public service transformed into a public ideological battle between Comrade Bertie and CEO Harney, all under the management of Miniature Brennan, and most spectacularly Cullen.

Once they've checked into the Hilton, which will probably be surrounded by roadworks, as Fingal are now seeking to bypass the Clare Hall junction, they can look out at local attractions such as the Darndale Opera House, (Tesco), and another new unserved suburb being developed at the North Fringe.

After a few days of travelling around the city, requiring about 29 different tickets, long walks between services, confusion, a lack of information, frustration, and delays upon delays, they decide enough is enough and drive back home.

An accident at Gorey involving a badger and a deer causes a 5 hour tailback all the way to Balbriggan. They sit on the M50 at Park West and look around as night falls. The lights of western suburbs stretch as far as the eye can see, but not as far as the brake lights on the thousands of vehicles between them and the Red Cow. They finally get home late that night, utterly physically and mentally drained from their few days dealing with Dublin Transport.

They think how in the name of God do 1.5 million people who work in the city and suburbs deal with that sh1te every single day? They vow to get the train up next time, only for reality to hit them immediately. Who is in charge of this mess? Who is responsible for the lack of buses, the lack of rail, the lack of imagination and the lack of the political will to do something? They then see the canvass card for Martin Cullen TD which arrived in the post in their absence.

Will they still vote for him?

Please, on behalf of Dubliners, I urge you not to let this talentless cretin anywhere near Dail Eireann ever again. If it's not Environment or Transport, it will be Health or Education.
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

It could be revenge for no RadioTherapy Facility in the South East, no university for Waterford and many other things. Until we get these things and more, we will keep reelecting him. Harsh but fair.

If you're referring to the failures of the various Ministers for Health and Education in the FFPD alliance, well they weren't all Dubs and it's a ridiculous comeback to the issues I raised in any case. What your post reads to me is; FFPD haven't delivered for Waterford, so we'll keep electing their most incompetent representative as our TD. If the coalition of the cretins aren't capable of delivering for your constituency I've a mad new innovative strategy for you. Vote for someone else!

When the privileged burghers of South Dublin are made to answer for their crime of inflicting the Geraldine variant of Social Democracy on the unsuspecting Irish people (from Nov 82 - Feb 87 for the historically and politically illiterate), then perhaps citizens of the Deise will be more willing to listen to the facile moralising of precious, prissy, Jackeen Blueboys.
