"Dublin Bus was granted €10 million in 2006 under the Government’s Transport 21 investment programme for the roll-out of an automatic vehicle location system on its bus fleet, which was installed on all its vehicles last year"

    10 million?
whats wrong with putting a cheap android phone on each bus.
that would work as a vehicle locator.

    1000 buses x 100 euro = 100,000
    ie 100 times cheaper.
    well done paddy.
    well done indeed.

10 years and still nothing. How embarrassing is that?

I suspect in addition to general incompetence, that big fish in small ponds trying to exercise what little power they have are responsible, as well as the kind of demarcation crap the trade unions engage in and defend etc. - things that wouldn't even occur to decent people...

Mary O'Rourke launched the Integrated Ticketing project for Dublin in May 1999.
Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) took over the project in 2002.
Seamus Brennan, in April 2004, stated that the Integrated Ticketing System (ITS) would be fully operational by 2005.
Martin Cullen said in March 2005 that ITS would be rolled out at the beginning of 2006.
Noel Dempsey, in June 2008, said that ITS would be launched in September 2009 and fully operational one year after that.

We are now well into 2011 and Minister Varadkar has stated that the system will be operational within a year. (last line here; Quinn defends Gilmore decision - The Irish Times - Thu, Mar 10, 2011 )
Perhaps the Minister should ask why previous attempts at estimate a finish date for ITS were so totally wide of the mark.
He risks making a fool of himself as the previous Ministers have.
Simple just look at all the other FF cost and deadline figures. Bank bailout 4-5 bn sorted within 6 months OOPS
