Check out he OV chip card; the system for the Netherlands.

The card covers travel via bus and train inside the Netherlands and can be loaded up to cater for international journeys with start and finish in Netherlands. You simply swipe in and out for each journey.

The 15 staff that are working 24/7 on this difficult task are all probably TDs children. How else would they get such a good gig

When I use my 5 day commuter ticket, i scan it getting on the bus it reduced the days available by one and for the rest of the day it recognises the card.
    The following day ditto.

Now if you did that on all public transport and set maybe a fee of €4.50 per day per commuter everyone would be happy !!!

My belief is we are a very backward country. 10 years to sort this. The more I think about it, there must be an agenda to dither. Do we want people to stay in their cars rather than switching to public transport ?

Do we make that much money on petrol & diesel that we cant afford to take any less.

Do you not realise Dublin is unique? Sure they don't have a Luas in London so how would there card work here? (I am sure that is the thinking of senior staff in the department)

We should also remember that these senior civil servants had a smaller pay reduction because they lost their performance related bonuses. You have to wonder they did to get those bonuses originally.

They do actually have a 'Luas', it's called the South London Tram. And the Underground, and the Overground, and the DLR, and national rail, and all the London borough councils, and the Mayor's office... More 'stakeholders' than trees in north Dublin, yet it still gets done.

We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

    12 actually ...possibly 13

    from the IT article
"If the project goes well numbers will be expanded and testing will then move on to the pay-as-you-go cards after the summer.

Early next year Irish Rail systems will be integrated and the infrastructure will gradually be rolled out to non-State-owned bus companies."

    FFS...

They've had the scanners installed in dart stations since late last year. Why did they install them 3-4 months before they were ready to test them? Why didn't they test them as they were installing them? What do they do now, if something is wrong? Pull them all out again?

They've had scanners in the buses since 2008. These are identical to the scanner that have been used in the Luas since the begining of the last decade. They us identical chips with identical format. Why can we still not use our Luas smart cards to pay for the bus? Why has Dublin Bus still not brought out their own smart card?

And when they do - how will we top up our cards on the north side of the city, where there are no top-up or ticket machines? Do we need to get into the city center to top up?

    This is a joke.
