Dont worry, I won't be getting excited by ANY opinion poll. I think independents will do better than expected

in response to the query about the pro life literature, i was parked outside ballinagar church last saturday night about 5 mins before the service ended a young man approached my car (bear in mind its dark outside) opened the door and handed me a leaflet, he asked me to take it but did not say what it regarded and continued to place them on the windscreens of the other cars in the carpark. he was a well spoken guy but did not have a local accent at a guess i'd say he was from dublin.

Anyway, as the literature arrived, I read it, and must say Clark's was much more interesting and clever. Not my line of thinking, though. But I'd never vote for Scanlon having read his boring unenthusiastic letter. No politicies mentioned. When reading it you could think he'd be happy if he didn't make it. And the excuse for not having appeared personally: "adverse weather conditions" is just untrue. The weather was okay since the election was called. Very poor.

See if I get more of this kind of literature, unnecessarily.
Why why does our political system allow somebody like Clarke who has a criminal record for fraud run in elections even local elections, if I was going for most jobs with annual income in excess of €70k I would not be eligible if I had a criminal record. We need election reform NOW

I also think anyone who deals in property should be banned from politics!

But on Clarke, one of his leaflets says that doctors earn €400,000 and that farmers are the backbone of the economy...

    Big Ticket

This is my first time voting in this constituency and to increase my knowledge of the candidates I went along to the Big Ticket event to help in my decision making. This is my penny's worth, if anyone is interested, based on no preconceptions (apart from McSharry the slimy git!!)

Perry: rambling fool, god help us if he's a minister.
Clarke: didn't impose himself on the debate, didnt get his views across.
Colreavy: was expecting more from him.
Cahill: didn't say much but couldn't argue with any point he made. honest.
Marc McSharry: had dealings with him previously through his estate agency, example of everything that is wrong with this country. Arrogant sod.
Gabriel McSharry: 3 minute speech was impressive but disappeared after this.
Bree: seems to care and would fight your corner.
Gogan: stuck to his opinions no matter how idiotic + unpopular. I respect that in some strange way!
O'Keefe: Was the most impressive from the main political parties. Was quite surprised. will definitely give some preference.
Scanlon: Defeatist. almost didn't want to be there.
Love: Was the most impressive on the night. Spoke with passion + made alot of sense. Really seemed to care about the people and most other candidates seemed to respect/agree with him.
McLoughlin:Was in the running before this. Zero public speaking skills, just read manifesto when asked anything. Very poor candidate, would be a shame if elected. Would not be a strong voice for SNL.
Cawley: seems to care but would be lost in the Dail.

I know that a few hours listening to a debate doesn't tell me the whole picture and I have probably got it wrong with some candidates. As I said above, Love was the most impressive. He doesn't get any mention on this forum and I know there is virtually no chance of him getting elected but he will get my No.1 and will have a good think about my remaining preferences.

    Very interesting, thank you.

Confirms some things for me, but also gives some food for thought. Great thing about STV stestem is that your proposed vote for Love is not wasted if he is not elected - your vote continues to ripple through the process. I've found O'Keefe(Lab) the most impressive - but I'm struggling to vote No.1 because of existing biases and preferences on my part. Need to work it out.

i agree with you re independants . i see another poll locally today has independants on 25% with FG on 32%. there is no way FG can win 2 seats
on 32%, this poll was taken on 10th February before campaign got under way
but i dont think Perry and mcLoughlin have got any better.i think the real poll on friday will suprise mamy.

Agree,Perry will take the first seat IMHO,McLoughlin will be sqeezed to be overtaken by MaFFia' Scanlon(the Ballymote heartland will remain loyal to put Eamonn ahead of HRH on 1'st pref's)There is a quota for left leaning candidate's,Town based Cllr Declan Bree wii take the seat for the ULA.

To be fair, bree getting ahead of Colreavy is wishful thinking. Who did the Leitrim vote go to? I agree that Scanlon will get some, but seeing that theres so many left candidates in Sligo, their vote will be broken up

Yes Perry will get in first, Scanlon on HRH transfers. However I'm not overly sure of Bree (thiugh I wouldn't mind seen him in). I think there wil be 3 fighting for the last seat - McLoughlin, Colreavy and Bree. I tdepends how it pans out. Whoever is last of the three decides it. If Bree is last he will put Colreavy in and vice versa. If McLoughlin is last, he may well put Bree in. I think it will come down to who is higher between Bree and Colreavy on the last count. If McLoughlin goes first, will there be enough transfers to Bree to overtake Colreavy? Will many of McLoughlins transfers go to Colreavy, since McLoughlin is canvassing Nth Leitrim? Will Bree be enough ahead of Colreavy if the latter happens? The later counts will be very interesting.

I know Bree is getting good feedback on the doorsteps (my wife is canvassing for him) but also Colreavy seems to be being received well.
