SF support of Mayor Bloomberg visit to Sligo criticised

Today SF councillors in Sligo snubbed IPSC and Anti-War campaigners in supporting NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s controversial visit to Sligo.

Expressing disappointment that Sligo’s Sinn Fein councillors had attended the reception in Sligo City Hall to honour Mayor Bloomberg, Mr Tim Mulcahy spokesperson for the Local Antiwar group said that the Anti War movement had specifically requested public representatives not to attend any function where Mayor Bloomberg was guest of honour.

Quoted in Local media this afternoon he said ‘we had hoped that the three Sinn Fein councillors would have joined in the anti war demonstration in Ballymote - it’s clear that their failure to participate in the demonstration today was designed to appease Sinn Fein’s wealthy American backers. When it comes to a choice between principles and money, principles always seem to lose out’.

There had been strong local opposition to the visit due to recent statement supporting the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon issued by the NY Mayor.

How did the Sinn Féin cllrs "snub" the IPSC and anti war campaigners? Did they issue a statement saying that they supported Bloomberg and his coming to Ireland or did they just meet him to discuss things.

Would Mr. Tim Mulcahy happen to be a member of the swp. Secondly he does not decide whether or not members of Sinn Féin meet a foreign mayor. Capitalist imperialist pig though he is.

‘we had hoped that the three Sinn Fein councillors would have joined in the anti war demonstration in Ballymote -
Was there any Sinn Féin presence there?

it’s clear that their failure to participate in the demonstration today was designed to appease Sinn Fein’s wealthy American backers.
How many "wealthy American backers" would have noticed a demo a Ballymote?

Surprise surprise. Once they go up the steps of city hall, the "revolution" is over...

According to the news, the protesters said that Ted Kennedy would have been a better choice to unveil the monument. Well that speaks volumes for their credibility

Tubber, the title of this thread is totally incorrect. Sinn Fein did not support the visit by Bloomberg. In fact they quite clearly opposed it. Because they chose to demonstrate their opposition differently to Tim Mulcahy is not support for the visit. I actually have good time for Tim Mulcahy but he is completely wrong on this. Either he is deliberately trying to have a go at SF knowing that what he is saying is untrue or else he is being speaking through ignorance of what the actual situation is.

They actually went into the Mayors Parlour in Sligo City Hall where the reception was being held and handed him a letter of protest. They then left the reception after making their protest, unlike Labour Cllr Veronica Cawley who made no protest and remained for the Civic Reception for the Mayor. Interesting why Mr Mulcahy chose nt to criticise the Labour Councillors for not supporting the demonstartion but instead chose to criticise those that actually opposed the visit.

Anyway Tubber you should change the title of the thread. It is extremely misleading to say the least.

Wasn't Bloomberg the guy who spent so much on the election campaign, it cost him about 2 dollars a vote?
