Belfast Ógra to host Worldwide Youth In Struggle Event!

Belfast Ógra Shinn Fein will be hosting a massive international youth event in the city from 11 - 13 August, to remember the sacrifice that young people have made and are still making internationally in the struggle of freedom, justice and equality.

Belfast Ógra Shinn Fein Spokesperson Pierce Gormley said,
“This weekend will be great for all young people in the city to learn how young people their own age took on imperialism, capitalism and discrimination and won. These people are sources of inspiration to all young people and its great that we in Belfast can learn and partake in an event that recognises the sacrifice made by young people and also the sacrifice that young people are making today throughout the world in the global struggle against imperialism, capitalism and discrimination.”

“We in Belfast Ógra Shinn Fein are proud to welcome people from the Basque country, Catalonia, Palestine, and Cuba to our town and are asking young people in this city to come and take part in the events planned. There are events planned across the city and we welcome everyone who wishes to learn about these struggles and thus find their role in creating a new Ireland and a new world, based on the principles of peace, justice and equality”

now if they could only include vandalism, grafittism, hoodyism and "cleaning up their bedroom"-ism the world would be a better place!

I wasn't aware such things were finished quite yet.

Why do OSF keep using exclamation marks, by the way?

"... thus find their role in creating a new Ireland and a new world, based on the principles of peace, justice and equality."

Surely it would be better inviting people from backgrounds that don't fit in with your blinkered view of the world. I notice the mention of Cubans, Basques and Palestinians- no problem there, but hardly a surprise. Looks like it's all gonna end up as a mutual back-patting exercise with worship being paid to photos of Gerry and Fidel at the end.

Why not invite people whose ideologies may spark debate- Isrealis, Tories etc. rather than acting as if the job has been done and dusted and you have 'won'. What's the point in holding discussions with people who already hold the same views as yourselves?

As it stands, it's hardly ground-breaking stuff

Capitalism won. Did OSF never notice that pretty much every country except for Cuba and Venezuela and Bolivia to an extent is effectively capitalist? I thought the collapse of The Soviet Union was fairly well covered by the news. Imperialism ended for a variety of reasons, I wouldn't say young people were one of them and sadly discrimination is still strong in different forms all around the world.

Imperialism ended for a variety of reasons,
I wasnt aware imperialism had ended, just have to look to the middle east and the current anglo- american imperialism that occurs there on an hourly basis.

wouldnt expect any less from rocky because fine gael support imperialist organisations such as nato.

fair play to ogra once again taking positive action

What's positive about it? Just seems like the same old pie-in-the-sky 'we love Che' stuff, without actually doing anything to challenge ideas or deal with real, contemporary issues. Organising a meeting with young members of the DUP, UUP and SDLP would be positive- they might actually learn something about their political opponents' points-of-view. Charity begins at home after all.

Yeah NATO and their great attempts to take over the world. Sure when aren't NATO involved in one of their imperialist wars? How's that going by the way?
