There are so many good reasons to oppose this. Here's the best two:

90 years ago a British ship sailed up the Liffey and levelled half of Dublin in an attempt to quell the rising. Allowing a British ship to dock here on the 90th aniversary is spitting on the memory of the volunteers and the civillians that died.

This ship was involved in bringing troops and equipment to invade Iraq. Allowing it to dock here is not all that different from allowing US warplanes to land at Shannon. I think that if given the choice the Irish people would reject this type of support for the war.

A good third is that this ship has a recruitment stand onboard.

90 years ago we were in the middle of a freedom fight: what did you expect, the ship to bring provisions.

I take your second point on board - pun intended.

If we opposed the presence of naval ships from any of the countries with military involvement in Iraq or Afghanistan, we'd be turning a fair few states away (Japan, etc). Though I sincerely hope that the next time a US aircraft carrier anchors in Dublin, there won't be the same wide-eyed pro-American fanfare

really? Surely you'd need prior security clearance to get onboard, so its not like Joe Ordinary is going to pass the recruitment stand and think 'hey, I never thought about joining the Royal Navy before'.

Anyway, if he wants to maintain weapons systems that only UK citizens can actually fire, he's welcome to it…

    hypocrisy

What SF nonsense. SF leaders sit down with so called Irish Americans who bankroll the Republican Party. As the slaughter goes on in the middle East SF friends in the Democratic party remain silent.

Shannon is used virtually as a US airforce base.
