Abstentionism from Westminster was a founding principle of Sinn Féin - a principle which was logically extended to include abstentionism from the British instituted assemblies in Dublin and Belfast after partition. This has been the Sinn Féin position throughout the organisation's existence, although it's a position that has come under attack from people within the organisation a number of times in the 20th century. As far as I'm aware it's written into the Sinn Féin constitution that any member expressing support for the ending of abstentionism to Leinster House and Stormont automatically forfeits their membership of Sinn Féin (which is fair enough since to hold such an opinion/view runs contrary to the outlook of the organisation).Originally Posted by padraig
