More research suggesting a Catholic majority but, because this is from the Community Relations people, it comes with a soother for Unionists about Catholics only voting Nationalist as a counterweight to the DUP: Northern Ireland report: Statistically the future is Catholic and female - Northern Ireland, Local & National - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk

I wonder why it's taking so long to reveal the results of the last Northern census? It's been almost a year now. You wouldn't think it would take that long to numbercrunch statistics for less than 2 million people...
There is a clear trend towards a Catholic majority since about 1960 onwards. If Catholic emigration levels hadnt have been so high during the years of Stormont rule there may already have been a mjority. The trend has however slowed somewhat due to the decrease in the size of Catholic families. In my opinion the major determining factor in the next 20 years in terms of tipping the balance will be the increased death rate amongst a generally older Protestant population. This will lead to a Catholic majority alot sooner than some might believe. When the census figures come out later this year a proper analysis can take place.
Time will tell if it will lead to a United Ireland, I personally believe it wiill. What may happen beforehand is a further negotiated compromise such as the continued existence of the 6 counties for a transitional period but with significant symbolic changes such as the Tri-colour flown equally beside the Union Flag etc at government buildings etc.
