What violent offence was Bobby Sands convicted off and who convicted him?
Bobby Sands was convicted of possession of firearms in Sept. 1977 and sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment.

As he was a member of the IRA, I have little doubt that he would have been prepared to use said firearm, if he felt it furthered his cause

Are the current generation of IRA prisoners (of whatever pre-fix) entitled to full political status. Having signed away political status with the GFA Mr Adams now concedes they are. Lets hope they use their good offices to ensure they get it and not the current segregated regime in Maghaberry where criminals are regularly placed on the wings because they have/had republican connections.

Bobby Sands didn't have a firearm in his possession though.

One person in a car of 4 did, all of them must have had their hands on the firearm at the time as they were all done for possession.

Are you saying he probably didnt have anything to do with the weapons?
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

    Who knows?

That's the beauty of the Brits, a firearm found in a car and all 4 people are guilty.

One of them could have had it unbeknown to the others or all four of them could have been about to do something.

just out of interest, have any of the four men maintained to this day (or to their deaths) that they were never IRA members?

(e.g. from my limited knowledge, the vast majority of people convicted by supergrasses or under the ROI's OASA would seem to have been paramilitaries.)

There is no reason why there should be two concurrent discussions on a single topic.
