My condolences to the families of all those involved.

I am uncomfortable with posts that are already pre-judging what happened in this accident.

maybe we could put condolences on this thread and take all discussion of policy and young drivers over to another thread.

Of course the family is grieving and your heart does go out to them but it's quite clear what happened from the photo. By the time the results and inquest come out, it will be just another road death back in November 08.

A 17 year old driving a Honda Integra!!! FFS - he was probably on a BMX until last year!!

We always hear of the dangers re speed, alcohol, etc and percentages, statistics, etc are quoted but they are never attributed to actual incidents with real people.

Fast track the whole inquest procedure if necessary but fit a cause to the heartbreak and grief we will see on the faces of family members and friends on the tv over the next couple of days.

Nothing on RTE site yet! I don't know the details but that does look like a dangerous road. Are we really doing enough to prevent these tragedies?
Every time is see one of these crashes there's always some mangled boy racer car involved.
Kids should not get such powerful machines, why is it legal for a 17 yr old to drive a car with almost 200 bhp?

Thats just an accident waiting to happen.

So every dead teenage boy is a "Boy racer"?
I crashed my car as a teen, I was not speeding nor being reckless. I was driving a Ford Cortina ffs.
Inexperienced maybe, but hey, were'nt we all.
Had I died at the accident no doubt I'd have been labelled a boy racer (sexist label by the way).
Reckless and dangerous drivers come in all ages, sexes, shapes and sizes.

The simple solution is Governments around the world insist that car makers cease producing cars capable of breaking the maximum speed limit.
I have always said, if a family member of mine is killed by a speeding car, I would consider a lawsuit against the car maker as an accomplice in the act.
This was what stopped the tobacco industry , and is the only thing that will stop the car industry from showing disregard to public health and safety.

I never said every dead teenage boy is a boy racer, i questioned why someone with so little experiance should legally be allowed to operate road legal machinary that was partly designed for a racetrack.

Road deaths are at their highest in this age group, obviously not everyone at this age is a maniac but there is nothing in place to stop hormonal inexprianced youths from having highly dangerous vehicles.
People in factories arnt put in charge of highly dangerous complicated machinary on their first day of work, yet pass a relatively easy driving test and you have a licence to drive whatever you want.

It takes years of experiance to properly handle a powerful car, to understand about traction when cornering and to control and predict how the car handles.
Even then they're still extremely dangerous, certain cars should be illegal to own unless youve had 3 years driving experiance.
By then they will have learned a lot.

    Not so simple!

The maximum Speed Limit in Europe is 155mph (on the Autobahnen).

The maximum Speed Limit in Ireland is 74.57mph (on the Motorways).

Most fatal accidents happen below the posted speed limit, some involving head-on collisions (add the closing speeds of both vehicles to get the impact speed), and others where a seatbelt was not worn ("thrown from the vehicle" being the giveaway).

The simple solution is to raise the age you can get a license to 21 and make it mandatory to drive under 50 mph and insert a tacograph or chip into said cars to make you obey the rules of the road. Won't be done of course. Whatever one thinks of the political affiliations of these two men they were working hard for their party and hats off to such people. Without such people our society would be the poorer. Shocking waste and sad for all 3 families.
